What is Journalisted?
Journalisted is an independent, not-for-profit website designed make it easier for the public to find out more about journalists and what they write about.
It is non-partisan, and intended to make the news media more transparent and accountable on behalf of the public, as opposed to journalists or PR.
The challenge in navigating the news
As you peruse the news, you may increasingly come across unfamiliar information and writers, and have limited tools with which to judge them.
You may find yourself asking: 'How do I know this journalist knows what they're talking about?' 'Does this journalist have much experience writing about this subject?' 'How can I contact this journalist about this article?' The Media Standards Trust set up
Journalisted to help you answer these questions.
The solution
Journalisted is an online directory of journalists who write for national news outlets in the UK. It provides information about every journalist published by a national newspaper and the BBC.
On
Journalisted you can see:
- - Articles they have written (updated real time)
- - Links to their biographical information (official website, Wikipedia)
- - Tag clouds showing the subjects they write most about
- - Contextual information about their articles (such as comments and blogs linking to them)
In a world of growing information overload, we hope it will be an additional way for the public to navigate news, compare different stories and build up a range of journalists that they read regularly and trust.
Impact
It is the first UK website – after the now defunct www.byliner.com - to offer a free searchable database of UK national journalists published by one of 21 news outlets online.
At present
Journalisted is used by over
150,000 people a month, provides information on
18,269 journalists and has indexed over
1.5 million articles. Over
7,500 journalists have helped improved their own profile pages.
Although
Journalisted is not comprehensive, we intend to build up the number of news outlets covered over time. Due to the fact that articles are indexed automatically it is also bound to contain mistakes (though we do our best to correct them whenever we find them).
How is it funded?
Journalisted is funded by a number of charitable foundations (particularly Esmee Fairbairn and the Nuffield Foundation) and by individual Board members of the Media Standards Trust.
